Brandon Stewart and Jacques Janse van Rensburg continued DCM’s domination of the Cape Pioneer Trek with victory on the penultimate day of the race. Their win meant DCM’s team have been responsible for four of the five stages contested so far. Their colleagues Max Knox and Thomas Zahnd finished third to defend their overall lead.
Adrien Niyoshunti and Kevin Evans bounced back from their mechanical issues on stage four to take second in a tightly contested sprint between the top three teams. The duo have been close to a stage win on several occasions during the race and Evans acknowledged after the stage that his expectations for the race may be slightly out of sync with his teammate.
“I am little bit concerned about Adrien’s hectic racing schedule. The DCM Cape Pioneer Trek is the last race of the season for most of us while Adrien still has to compete in a two day race in Rwanda as well as the African Road Championship also in Rwanda and then in addition to that six day Tour of Rwanda,” he said.
“Therefore I thought there was no need for us to contest the sprint to the line, but as we raced around the last corner Adrien accelerated hard and in doing so he caught me completely off guard so I could not follow his wheel. I now realize that it is important to Adrien to win a stage, so I owe it to him to come up with a really big effort in the last stage tomorrow.”
The stage was marked by a flock of sheep that caught a leading group off-guard. Janse van Rensburg; Max Knox and Thomas Zahnd (DCM); Kevin Evans and Adrien Niyonshuti; Matthys and Gerrie Beukes came across the flock around halfway through the stage. Despite the surprise, Stewart took the incident in his stride.
“I just knew if I rode straight towards them and slid a bit that the sound of the bike’s skidding tyres and dust would scare them off a bit so we could pass,” he said.
Saturday will see the field return to Oudtshoorn where the race began five days ago. With a comfortable lead Knox and Zahnd are, barring disaster, expected to be crowned champions.
