This Sunday brings upon us the next round of the Chocolate Foot/Singletrack mind series of 8hour races. MarathonMTB.com will be appearing in the males pairs category with myself accompanied by cameo rider from the Swell/Redshift MTB program, resident single track stomper Nick Both. Races in the Southern Highlands always bring a smile to my dial. The recently carved trails at Wingello are no exception. Having raced there earlier this year at the very well respected James Williamson memorial event, I am itching to get back on those trails.
Having being partly designed by the late and great James Williamson, these trails I believe are a real testament to what a legend of the sport Willo was and this whole MTB area will be a testament to him and all our memories of the legend himself.
Those who have being racing XC for a time will recall the splendour of the now logged Penrose forest XC circuit (the old, old one). Racing through here 9 years ago in wet and boggy conditions in the U17 NSW series was still one of my most enjoyable moments on an MTB. The trails in the Southern Highlands never dissapoint no matter what the conditions. Looking at the forecast for this weekend, this may be the case again. Time to pull out those mud tires and high pressures that we thought we could put to bed after the recent Husky 100km. For those giving the full real insurance XCM series a real crack, this will be an important round to attend as many of these trails used at Wingello make up a significant portion of the single track dished out at the Highland fling due for later this year.
Since the Husky, I still have not even hosed the bike down, underneath the nearly inch layer of pooey mud on there Im sure a full overhaul will be revealed. After two sessions of backcountry XC ski trips since the Husky, not much time has been had for cycling training. With confirmation of the Subaru/marathonMTB.com team’s presence on the starting grid at the crocodile trophy in October this will have to change. The oppurtunity to race sweet, sweet singletrack with ol mate Bothy for 8hours on Sunday is too good an opportunity to miss!
