The LineBreak CalfGuards are what you wear when you’re so stuffed you can’t pull your shorts off to put on the full length tights. Or at least, that’s one of the uses for this garment. They’re also a good alternative to LineBreak’s compression tights in hotter weather. This has made them an attractive summer and mid-season choice for runners who are keen to minimise muscle damage to their calves while they pound the pavement. Some solo 24 Hour riders use them for similar reasons, as the damage to this area can be quite significant after such a long time in the saddle – not just from pedaling, but from constant trail vibration and from holding the body above the saddle on fun (read: rough) descents.
The CalfGuards are designed from the same firm, moisture wicking fabric as the full length compression tights I have written about before. They also offer similar benefits in terms of ‘holding’ the muscles, temperature regulation and enhancing recovery so I won’t re-iterate this here. The stirrup at the foot allows for comfortable placement of the CalfGuards as they are pulled into place from the sole of the foot to the base of the knee. This spare set of legs also fold up to the size of a very small pair of socks making them easy to stash in your pack for the end of a race or ride – just in time for resting (or tea-pot-ing) on the grass.
