In July 2013 the Iron Bike stage race will celebrate it’s 20th edition with plans to make it even more memorable. The event, held in July and situated in the Italian Alps is regarded as the hardest MTB stage-race in the World by those who have ridden it. In recent years it has gained popularity in with British riders seeking the ultimate challenge.
Starting on July 20th at Limone Piedmont (Cuneo), finishing 9 days later at Sauze d’Oulx (Torino) making it one day longer than before. Anyone taking on the challenge can expect some of the best riding in the Alps with huge climbs being rewarded by long, technical descents.
Next years event will feature some exciting new terrain, starting right from the go. Stage 1 will even include a helicopter uplift! After riding to a height of 2200m, everyone will be lifted to the peak of another mountain, Testa Rimà to start a thrilling descent to the stage finish at Vinadio. Other race highlights will include passing through the Buco di Viso tunnel, a small alpine tunnel crossing the French/Italian border at an altitude of 2882m! The old favourites will not be missed out, with Mt Chabberton at 3200m and the 4000 steps of the Fenestrelle fort also featuring.

The final route will not be unveiled until the evening before the race when riders are handed the road book, but guided by 2012 statistics over 700km and 27,000m of climbing can be expected. It is not for the faint hearted, but comments from previous finishers prove it is worth the effort.

Entries open on December 15th at 9am GMT and are extremely limited, just 120 places are on offer and expected to sell out within 24hrs. Prices from €550 for the first 40 entrants rising to €650 for the seoncd 40 and to €750 for the final 40 entrants, which is “all inclusive”. This includes, all food, including feed stations, transfer from Sauze d’Oulz to the start town of Limone Piedmont. Each nightly stop includes amenities such as toilets, showers and water for bike washing. Luggage transportation is also part of the package although riders must provide their own tent, which is a compulsory as all riders must sleep under canvas.
