Holiday breaks for Marathon MTBers

It is this time of year that makes it interesting having readers in both the Northern and Southern hemisphere’s. Some are experiencing heat and the long days of summer. Other are experiencing cold, short daylight hours, and rain or snow. But in general, everyone has a bit more time on their hands in the holiday season. So then it comes down to how you use it.

You can probably gain an idea from your own circle of friends as to what people are doing. I have friends with lofty targets for how many kilometres they will ride. Others are targeting a series of cyclocross races in their region, more still are taking off on road trips to experience the joy of riding their mountain bikes in other places.

And that shows why I feel so lucky to live in Australia. I don’t have to stop riding due to climatic conditions. The weather conditions are never severe enough to need to shut it down completely. That’s not to say that I don’t need to take time off. But it does make the timing a little bit harder. If it is always a pretty good time to ride, how do you choose?

So that makes me more than a little envious as Facebook and Twitter feeds show fellow cyclists cross country skiing, or jetting off to Cape Town, southern Spain, or generally more hospitable climes to ride in. Although the conditions for riding in Sydney at the moment are great, doing so while carrying on working isn’t quite the same.

So wherever you are this holiday season, be it riding, racing, skiing, running or taking time off – enjoy the end of the year and thanks for visiting MarathonMTB.com in 2012 – we hope to see you again in 2013 as we take you inside the ABSA Cape Epic, the UCI Marathon Series, TransAlp, Transpyr, The Mongolia Bike Challenge – and as many of the best marathons and other stage races around the world that our contributors and riders can get to.
