One of the worlds best mountain biking stars was killed in a training accident near Shelley Beach, South Africa, on Thursday 3rd January 2013. Burry Stander was just 25 years old, yet had achieved more than most cyclists could ever hope. More than that, Stander was an icon for South African mountain biking, and in no small part responsible for the growth of the sport in his country.
Details of the accident are still being investigated, but it appears there was a collision with an taxi while he was training. Stander died from the injuries he sustained.
Stander will be remembered by his new wife Cherise Stander (nee Taylor), his family, the Specialized Team and Songo charity, and all the countless people who he happily met while racing around the world.
RIP Burry Stander.
