Marcel Zamora (Buff-Niner) closed a dramatic day’s racing with a solo stage win on stage 6 of the 2013 Genco Mongolia Bike Challenge presented by Orbea on Friday. Zamora won after closing down a huge breakaway effort by Maral-erdene Batmunkh (Genco Tour Team) and Mike Blewitt (Subaru-MarathonMTB.com).
The duo had escaped soon after the start of the day’s 170km stage, and at one point held a 13 minute advantage over a the lead group. But unfortunately for the pair, it wasn’t to be, as they were caught a passed by Zamora after a brave 120km stand.
Race leader and likely repeat winner Cory Wallace (Kona) claimed third, with Jason Sager (Jamis) in third. The result will likely confirm Wallace as the overall winner when the race arrives in XIII Century Park on Saturday.
In the Women’s category, Catherine Williamson (Bizhub-Energas) should also hold on to her overall lead, as she once again crossed the line first, ahead of Sonya Looney (Topeak-Ergon). Should the two repeat that feat tomorrow, it will have been a clean sweep of 1-2 throughout the race. Erin Greene (Endura NZ) claimed another 3rd place finish ahead of Jennifer Schulz, Jessica Douglas (Liv Giant) and Bethany Thompson.
Batmunkh’s heroics on stage 6 have helped to inspire his team of 3, including Altansukh Altanzul and Munkhtulga Erdensuren towards the title in that category, barring disaster on the final stage.
