Trained Cyclists required in Victoria for PhD study

Will Hayter prepared for the Cape Epic with a lot of indoor training.

Mountain biker and PhD student Karen Hill is reaching out to the Victorian MTB community to help with a study she is undertaking that relates to how nutritional supplementation will assist with training adaptations.

Karen Hill states that she is “looking for well trained male cyclists (road, mountain bike or triathlon)”. And they will be studying the “Effects of supplementing different proteins post – exercise, on endurance training adaptations.” The project aims to investigate how nutritional supplementation in the form of carbohydrate and protein following endurance exercise, effects improvements in training over 8 weeks.

To qualify, you must be a male participants:
1. Be aged between 18-35 years
2. Have 2 or more years of competitive cycling experience
3. Race at a B grade or higher level.

Inclusion in the study will be determined from VO2 max test results – pretty handy numbers to have on hand if you are a competitive cyclist.

The following procedures will be performed:
 Graded exercise test and VO2 max test
 Endurance performance test – 2 hour steady state cycling followed by 20 km cycling time trial
 DEXA scan (body composition)
 2 high intensity training sessions per week for 8 weeks (performed at Victoria University,
Footscray Park)
 8 week nutrition plan with all meals, snacks and supplements provided
 Blood and 2 muscle samples
