Training in Winter: Bikes or skis?

Living in Australia we are thankfully not constrained by the weather in winter. Extremely uncomfortable, maybe, but usually the worst is some driving rain or a freezing headwind. But for those living in less forgiving climates, wintertime can make riding outside near impossible.

With heavy snow covering the ground, the only way to get some quality time on the bike can be either on the trainer or a holiday to a far away desert island. Another option that combines the outdoors, training and mountains can be cross-country skiing.

This past winter (or Aussie summer) a few of the European Pro riders have put up pictures of their winter activities with riders from both XC and Marathon disciplines getting out into the winter wonderland. Nino Schurter’s recent web series documented his winter training and showed him high up in the Swiss alps getting in some good training time before the bike season started. Either by racing or heading out into the back country, skiing can be a great way to have a break from the bike and get out and enjoy nature, all the while still burning the lungs and legs! Although not really a necessity for us living down under, skiing can still be a great option to get up into the mountains and have an adventure!

After all if your going to be cold you might as well be cold at the snow!
