Organisers of the Escape from Cobra Mountain marathon in New South Wales, Australia have postponed the inaugural running of the race until early 2011 in order to avoid adverse weather conditions.
The event, which will offer participants 60, 120 and 161 kilometre course options near the coastal town of Narooma, had been scheduled to take place on December 5 but will instead be run on Sunday, April 3, 2011. Matt Koeber of race organiser BlackHeart Events explained that the decision had been taken after a number of recent Australian endurance events had been forced to contend with wild weather conditions.
“As you know, this year has been a tough one for event directors, particularly in the South-Eastern regions where extreme weather conditions have played havoc on events. We have taken a proactive approach in ascertaining the likelihood that the Escape from Cobra Mountain will fall during a time of favourable weather conditions.” said Koeber in a statement.
“Through consultation with the Bureau of Meteorology, and considering the current very high chance of extreme weather conditions linked to the existing La Nina weather pattern in the Pacific region over the coming months, we have decided to place a delay on the race.”
The new date of the event means it will fall one week before the Mont 24-Hour event in Canberra Australia on April 9-10 and may now provide an option for riders preparing for the latter event.
The change has also seen an alteration in the closing date for registration, with entries to remain open until March 17, 2011 or until sold out.
