Physiological Progression

I am often amazed by the progression of other cyclists – be it other Marathon mountain bikers, competitive road cyclists, cross country racers or just enthusiasts. A small time between seeing friends and acquaintances can leave me amazed at their progression. A few years has meant some people who were merely a trail obstacle to be passed, are now tearing legs off at the front of the race.

About four weeks ago, in one of Sydney’s recent deluges, I was out training with PT Brock. Although the weather was grim, and the pace was pretty steady, Brock was enthused about his riding. And so he should have been. Save for a few other riders, we were the only other ones committed (or committable) enough to be out in such conditions. But as motivated as he was, there was no denying that he was digging deep, putting in a big effort to ride on the front of the small bunch. His conversation was minimal, save for a few derogartory remarks sent in my direction when asked if he was feeling alright.

Times have changed though. We have both started racing again in our chosen disciplines of cycling – and the difference in our physiological gains is immense. Although I have been pleased with my results coming back to Sydney based Australian mountain biking,  PT Brock has thrown himself into the deep end at hard local road criteriums, in preparation for his Road and Track National Titles in January, and February. While I am used to a frustratingly linear improvement in performance at this time of year, Brock has taken off. A hard road group ride cannot in anyway be used as a performance test, but it can be impressive nonetheless. Suffering in about 7th or 8th wheel while swapping off on the way back to Sydney, any time I snuck a look to the front it was PT Brock who was up there – stringing it out around 55kmh and above. His effort was immensely strong, but he was swamped by all the hero’s wanting to be the Saturday morning World Champion.

Such a turn around in form had to be mentioned, and I commented on it as I drew level. But PT was still hungry for more.

“One day, I’m just going to ride away from all of them” The hunger and drive in his eyes and voice was easily apparent. And I believe he will too. Brock has determined his goals and is making huge steps towards achieving them. I am far from jealous – infact I’m stoked for him. Coming into my next Marathon it has given me some drive to make the next few days really count, before heading into a big build phase through the next month. The big goals are from February onwards, be it improved personal performances or podium places, I want to achieve more in 2011.  Creep now to reap later!
