Mountains To Beach: Following Jo Battersby

Day 5 started in Bermagui, by the ocean, warm temperature, light breeze. We were so excited to be riding the final stage of the mountains to beach. After a police escort out of town, we hit the snaking single track for 2 laps of the flowing trails. I raced my heart out, putting it in on the climbs and working the descents.

We left the forest and entered our 30min cruise stage along sealed roads. Then we lined up for the last 35km. The first section was grassy paddock traverses. We had to keep stopping to get the grass out of our deralliuers and Simon’s hanger broke so he had to turn it into a single speed! Ouch, grinding up the hills was hard work.

Then we hit the fun stuff. Descending to the ocean and riding along the sand as the waves were lapping at our wheels. Peter took a bad line and fell off in the soft sand, lying there clipped in as a wave splashed over him! Too funny really. Then a series of fast flowing water crossings, carrying our bikes over our heads, as we tried to stay dry.

The race finished on the beach at Narooma. As i rode the last bit of sand i realized that I was going to finish this race. Nothing would stop me now.

Coming up the finishing chute my dream of finishing a stage race was completed. I rode it all. I met the most wonderful, passionate, active and friendly people. Oh, and I sent my boss a text message to say I’m turning pro! Hehe.

Jo and scoot2 🙂
