First Look: Hutchinson Python Tubeless Ready, 29″

The Hutchinson Python tread pattern has been around for close to two decades. For years, this was the tread pattern of choice for many cross country racers. There have been many variations over the years: Python Gold, Airlight, wire bead Airlights, Tubeless, Tubeless Ready, Tubeless Light, 2.3″ variations… and save for some beefing up of the edge blocks, the actual pattern has not changed too much.

Pezzo won Olympic Gold on Pythons. Josh Flemming won theĀ  Australian XC Nationals in the mud on Pythons. Countless riders have used them since their inception.

So it is with some excitement that I will be reviewing the 29″ version of the current Hutchinson Python Tubeless Ready tyre. This was my go to tread pattern from 2002 until 2006, when I found that the durability of the 26″ Tubeless Light versions did not meet my expectations. But times change, so these will be mounted up and tested on my Scott Scale 29.

They are reasonably light, are available in a variety of casings and sizes, and roll well. They should prove to be a versatile Marathon tyre. But are they still in fighting form when compared to Racing Ralphs and Small Block 8’s, amongst other current favourites?

Stay tuned.
