When you’re requested to come across town to ride on an indoor trainer for 15 minutes, usually there is a pretty set response.
“No thanks, I have something on.”
But this request came from my brother in law James Mabbott, who was helping his colleague Simon Martin raise money for the Tour de Cure. Four bikes had been setup on trainers in the foyer of the KPMG building, and James was blunt in his reasoning
” I figured if I was doing it, I’d like to have someone suffering next to me.”
Given the rain that Sydney was receiving on Sunday and Monday, it seemed like a nice thing to help with, and a good way to get a hard 15 minutes in. The challenge was to ride the furthest distance in 15 minutes. Not particularly specific preparation for the ABSA Cape Epic, but that wasn’t really the point.
When you have a lot of business people look at you sweat, it is quite amazing how long 15 minutes can take. The four of us pedalled away hard, with Simon pedalling away at an amazing high and steady tempo. By chance alone I managed to creep ahead of him – although I hadn’t done a hill session in the rain in the morning, as he had!
It is all for a good cause, so if you would like to donate, visit the Tour de Cure website
