MarathonMTB.com Race Team rider Justin Maddog Morris is about to undertake a solo charity ride to raise funds for research into Huntington’s Disease.
Beyond racing this weekend at Round 3 of the Real Insurance XCM Series, the Husky 100ker, Morris has big plans. You can read about his goals at Every Day Hero Australia. In short, Morris is riding from Brisbane to Sydney via the inland route, and explains it in is hown style below:
“In June this year I will be riding my pushy solo and unsupported from Brisbane back down to Sydney through the Northern Highlands and Hunter valley of NSW. Now I am excited to do this just because I love riding my bike, but I also would like to take the oppurtunity to raise awareness of a disease that is close to my heart and has traumatic symptoms and side effects for those affected. Huntington’s Disease (HD) is a genetic neurodegenerative disease that affects 1 in every 10 000 Australians. Diagnosis results in brain cell death leading to traumatic cognitive, emotional and behavioural symptoms and eventually death. Much more information can be found at www.ahda.com.au . The 50/50 herditary link of the disease mean a further whole family network of a diagnosed individual live with a lifelong stress that they may one day contract the disease.
Due in part to opposition to stem cell research in the USA a cure for this disease is in need of much more research. Also the costs of living with the disease once diagnosed are very expensive. Hence, If any of you legends has a spare dollar or two it would mean the world to me and many others if you swung it these guys way. If you want to check out more about HD or ask me any questions regarding it I would be more than happy to have a yarn with ya.
Personally I live with Type1 diabetes and am cogniscent of the complications associated with living with a chronic disease. I am also doing a partnership with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) which I am also happy to have a yarn about.”
If you are interested in sponsoring Morris to help him reach (or exceed!) his goal of raising $AUS2000 just follow the link and support as best you can. And yes, if you are curious after checking the dates, Justin will be starting this two days after racing a hard Mountain Bike Marathon. Clearly he is passionate about the cause!
