Next weekend, Australia’s Marathon racing Elite will descend upon the south coast of NSW, for the Stevens Bikes Husky 100. This will be the third time this event has run, and the forecast looks like it may be a dry one! Defending champion Matt Fleming (Rockstar Racing) will be keen to defend his title. While ‘The Husky’ is a popular event in it’s own right, it is also part of the Real Insurance XCM Series, as the 4th round of the six round series.

The Real Insurance XCM Series is not only for Elite racers, but offers an opportunity for all riders to gauge their progress against their mates, their colleagues, or their adversaries. Points reward riders hard work and commitment, and are weighted depending on the strength of the field. Of course, you have to be in it to win it, and completing an event will gain points, whereas staying at home on the couch doesn’t.

A point score adds greater interest for some Elite racers, as there is a very worthwhile cheque after the last round (The Briars Highland Fling) in November. Andy Blair (Swell-Redshift) who was recently crowned Australian XCM Champion, has the lead in the points after his win at the Convict 100. This is not a decisive lead. Shaun Lewsi (Rockstar Racing) will be keen to earn his lead back, and Adrian Jackson (Flight Centre-Merida) is keen to get a big win for his 2012 season. The depth of field continues though, as Anthony Shippard (Jet Racing) has been training the house down since the Convict 100, sitting out the XCM Champs due to an incompatible passport. Mitch Codner is back in Australia, and could let loose and take the win. Trenton Day has been on a brilliant run of form, with a 2nd place at the Convict 100 and XCM Champs, and a win at the Rock Wallaby Enduro. The series, and race, are wide open.

In the women’s event, Jenny Fay (Rockstar Racing) has a commanding lead. Jess Douglas, recently crowned the WEMBO 24hr Champion, is traveling north from Victoria to challenge Fay for the win. None of this is set in stone, as race entries are still open until Wednesday 20th June – so get an entry in quick.
