Sonya Looney leaves Topeak Ergon to start her own project

Sonya Looney is a well-known professional ultra endurance athlete, who has traipsed across the globe and graced the podiums of the world’s stage race and 100 mile races over the last 4 years. Sonya has worked with sponsors as an individual athlete as well as managing the business aspects of running a team for 2015. Sonya Looney is the rider you expect to see go out of her way to travel to a new race, to find new challenges and keep progressing. It looks like creating her own team has allowed that to take another step.

Sonya’s team name is called Freak Show DeFeet, powered by COOLMAX® ECOMADE. Michael David Winery and DeFeet have both been individual sponsors of Sonya and came on as title sponsors for 2015. Sonya has enjoyed designing her own socks for DeFeet over the last 18 months.  COOLMAX® ECOMADE works with DeFeet and other textile industry brands creating a sustainable yarn made of 97% recycled plastic bottles.  Michael David Winery’s top selling Cab Sauv is called “Freak Show,” an appropriate name to describe Sonya’s challenging discipline of racing.

Other supporting sponsors are Topeak, Kask, Pivot, Shimano, Fox, Stans NoTubes, Ryders Eyewear, GU Energy, Castelli, Continental, Ritchey, Stages Power, and The Feed.

“It was great to be a member on some of the top mountain bike teams for the last several years. However, I’m excited to be developing my own project by utilising my business, marketing and project management skills to drive my career forward as well as support my sponsors. One of the strengths of being on a team is that everything is managed as a complete package, but you don’t get to pick every product you ride.  The strength of running my own project is that I can use and share my favorite products. I’m happy to be able to handpick industry leading sponsors and flattered that would pick me too!  This is going to be such a great year!”

Sonya is also very active on Twitter and Instagram.
