Mountain Biking in Livigno: Part One

Nice Training Camp Transalp

Livigno really is a training haven though.

Livigno is right up in the north of Italy, butting right up against Switzerland. They share a tunnel connection, a road pass, and at least three singletrack climbs over high passes that I know of. Of course, there are countless connections south into the Alta Valtellina region as well.

For a number of years, I visited Livigno alone or with friends to ride the trails that have been built in and around the town. Hans Rey had a lot to do with bringing great riding to the high valley. The “flow trails” that are now popping up in many areas, have been in Livigno for a long, long time. PLus there are plenty of natural trails to take you into beautiful hidden areas well away from the duty free shopping in town.

Just to start a series on the riding in Livigno, here’s a video put together by some of the local companies. It’s a little brand heavy – and far from marathon specific. But it should illustrate the kind of environment that makes for an amazing mountain biker’s playground. This is a little long – but stick with it. It shows some of the best areas around Livigno, plus the eating and drinking. We’ll profile some of the best locations in coming posts. For now, enjoy the scenery and get inspired!
