Women’s only multi-day MTB event announced

Tour de Femme
News has come that a women’s only mountain bike stage race will be run this August. With the breadth and depth of mountain bike stage races in South Africa, it should come as no surprise that the initiative can be found there.
The inaugural Evox Tour de Femme, a ladies-only multi-day mountain bike experience, will take place from 5–8 August 2016 at the Gondwana Game Reserve in the Garden Route region of South Africa’s Western Cape province.

The Evox Tour de Femme, hosted by Gondwana Game Reserve offers female mountain bikers a unique experience to ride their bikes in a Big Five game reserve, with luxury accommodation, exceptional catering, time to relax with friends and enjoy nature.

“We’re excited to have Evox on board as our title sponsor. Evox is an established sports and healthy lifestyle supplement brand. It’s a great fit for Tour de Femme, which will have three days of riding and will require both energy and recovery nourishment,” said Jackie Lange, Co-Director Titanium Events, the event owners.

“EVOX is excited to partner with the prestigious Tour de Femme. With a range of products specifically developed to fuel the riders and assist with recovery, EVOX will contribute towards the overall enjoyment of the of this picturesque event, allowing participants to savour every moment and gain full value from this wonderful initiative,” said Gareth Powell, Head of Marketing, Ascendis Health Sports Nutrition.

“With Gondwana Private Game Reserve as our venue, we have access to amazing routes in the area, both in the reserve and through adjacent land. The Garden Route really is a beautiful part of the country and the Big Five game aspect adds a bit of a thrill to the experience,” added Jenni Green, Co-Director Titanium Events Green.

“Gondwana Game Reserve is extremely excited to be involved in this unique event, designed to spoil the important people in our lives – our ladies. Our Exclusive Safari Park offers guests attentive service, fine African Cuisine, inspiring interiors, expert Game Rangers, and an array of activities, of which we are happy to say now includes mountain biking. We look forward to welcoming the riders, and sharing the secrets and spoils of Gondwana,” said Dean Pitt, General Manager Gondwana Game Reserve.

“Gondwana Game Reserve has committed full, protective game rangers and vehicle support for the participants, whilst riding in the reserve, so the ladies will be able to pedal with peace of mind, yet still feel the excitement of sharing the bush with lion, rhino, elephant, leopard, buffalo and many other species of South African wildlife,” said Green.

What’s involved with the Tour de Femme?

The Evox Tour de Femme is all about the experience and is not intended as a race, as such, so will not be timed. But there will be self-seeded groups to allow ladies of a similar fitness and skill level to share the experience. Each group will have a support vehicle that will provide mechanical back-up and nourishment.

“Ladies will be able to change groups each day should they feel they want to ride faster or slower. The objective is to enjoy riding your mountain bike in good company and through amazing South African bush,” added Lange.

Exact distances will be finalised closer to the event, but are planned to be:
Day 1: 50-55km
Day 2: 45–50km
Day 3: 45km

“The distances aren’t overly long because the Evox Tour de Femme is about more than just the riding. The routes will certainly offer a good challenge, but we want the ladies to enjoy their off-the-bike time too. There is only one entry package and it includes the three days of riding, three nights of luxury lodge accommodation, meals, drinks, bike wash, selected wines, boma dinner, bonfires, evening game drives and drinks, airport transfers and more. Everyone gets VIP treatment!” remarked Green.

Entries are open on Thursday 19 May 2016 and are limited to 50. Full payment secures your spot. Entries are in teams of two, not from a racing point of view, but rather as a ‘buddy system’. Information and entry forms can be found at www.tourdefemme.co.za.

There are prizes for early entries, including a weekend for two at Gondwana Game Reserve.
