Southern Peaks a big success!

Southern MTB Albany MarathonMTB XC Western Australia Southern Peaks

Last weekend saw the Southern Peaks race kickstart the Southern MTB Festival in Albany, Western Australia.

The weather was unsure what it wanted to do on Saturday, but the riders who had ventured to Albany were not. Rain and sunshine greeted the Southern Peak riders with a diverse terrain as they embarked on the 37KM or 50KM course.

Both routes took riders through some of the most scenic views of Albany. From Maitraya Private Retreat, riders pedalled their way through bushland, rocky terrain and coastal paths, while even catching a boat-ride across midway at Emu Point, before crossing the finish line in town at the Act- Belong- Commit Event Village.

Spectators waited eagerly for the first riders coming through with Callum Hunter completing the 37KM course in 2:02 and Nav Coole completing the 50KM in a remarkable 2:27 despite injury from an event only weeks ago!

“The Southern Peaks went fantastically well. Last year, we had just over 70 entries compared to 215 we received this year, and the trails again impressed riders,”
said Phil Stan-Bishop, Albany Mountain Bike Club President.
