Flight Centre Cycle Epic: Counting Down

Flight Centre Epic 2012

The 10th Flight Centre Cycle Epic is less than two weeks away. This is arguably the Marathon MTB event that started it all in Australia, originally as a long point to point ride to challenge mates. The original format changed in 2011 after the devastating floods that hit South East Queensland.

While the old course was known to be hard, but fast, the new course in 2011 caught some riders out. The smoother fire trails were gone, and replaced by little used dirt tracks and single track. Multiple punctures claimed one of the top contenders. And now the Epic had a new face – one of a brutally hard and demanding shorter course. Adrian Jackson and JAson English were ‘co-winners’ last year, and MarathonMTB.com racer Graeme Arnott made it into the top 5.

The 87km race this year is set to be huge. On September 16th, 470 racers will tackle the route. With Adrian Jackson back to defend, there will be numerous challengers. Jason English is rumoured to be returning. Graeme Arnott (Subaru-MarathonMTB.com) has ensured he entered opens, not veterans. Justin Morris (Team Type 1) has secured his entry. Jodie Willet, Naomi Hansen (Subaru-MarathonMTB.com) and Jenni King will be fighting for the women’s win.

The Flight Centre Epic is about far more than just a handful of elite racers. With a variety of events, starting at 4.2km for kids, up to the 87km Epic, there is a race for everyone. Events are spread over the weekend, and with an event location as comfortable as Spicers Hidden Vale, it’s worthwhile making a weekend out of it.
